The first task for Viking 1 was to study the proposed landing area in Chryse, and the first photographs taken of the area showed it to be much rougher than expected - to such an extent, moreover, that the eventual landing site was changed twice, still in Chryse but further west. One of the main concerns for this first American landing mission was to ensure that the lander did not descend onto a rock that might puncture the spacecraft and render it useless.
